Best Songs For Cruising On Your Klunker

A while back I pontificated about Bluetooth speakers on your bike. I think it’s OK—as long as you follow the guidelines in that post. So that opens up the next obvious question… what songs?

Well, you gotta think about the vibe.

For me, Klunkin’ is all about a chill ride, enjoying the city or trails and just settling into a mood where the troubles of the world dissolve into nothing.

Sometimes you need an uptempo beat to get you up that hill. Sometimes a funky groove as you carve S-turns down an empty slope of asphalt. Sometimes, you have to hear something a bit wilder to pop a few wheelies.

Anyway, this is what I came up with—and why.

This song is a vibe. And the basis for my best-selling T-shirts, “Damn It Feels Good to be a Klunker.” The old-school hip hop and rhymes by the South’s best… nothing more to say.

Are you a badfish too? Choosing just one Sublime song for this list was hard enough, and I don’t know if I even got the right one. But the vibe is there. Crank it up.

Are 311 “Sublime Light?” Maybe. But this track has the same chill attitude that makes me wanna cruise my Klunkerson around the seawall, tallboy lager in hand.

I’ll take no Third Eye Blind Bashing on this site! This whole album is unreal. This is probably the best song for a mellow ride though.

“We can live beside the ocean / leave the fire behind / swim out past the breakers / watch the world die.” Come on! Klunk on!

Oh, is it getting hilly? Need something to get that cadence up to 100 RPM? Let’s crank this track, the best off Pearl Jam’s sophomore album. Ride!

Let’s keep the up-tempo going with a drum-heavy track from the band with the best name of all time: Soundgarden. Turn up the volume a little, the neighbours won’t mind.

Klunkers! Mount up. Back to the old-school hip hop vibe; few were smoother than Warren G, accented by the late and great Nate Dogg. Who doesn’t love this track?

Here’s a guy who has never gotten his due. Citizen Cope is one of the dopest singers around—all attitude. Oh, and if the lines: “People wanna bomb us / More people gotta scatter and run from us,” doesn’t give you goosebumps… I can’t help ya.

Tell your kids if they like Taylor, they should REALLY like Maggie. She’s the original vibestress of this genre and “Alaska” is her best track.

If you don’t love this song, there’s seriously something wrong with you. It suits every occasion—but maybe this one, you get off your bike and watch the sun set with the track on a nice low volume… so you can sing along.

When the chorus hits, pop a wheelie. That’s the game. And sing along at the top of your lungs, butchering Plant’s incomparable vocals. Dig it!
